Apple today announced updated iMac models carrying LED-based 16:9 displays in 21.5-inch and 27-inch sizes :

The 21.5-inch model, which begins at $1,199 and carries a 1920×1080 display, offers Intel Core 2 Duo processor options running at 3.06 GHz or 3.33 GHz and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M or ATI Radeon 4670 graphics card options.

the 27-inch model begins, which carries a 2560×1440 display, begins at $1,699. In addition to the same processor options found on the smaller model, users can also select from a 2.66 GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 or 2.8 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, although machines carrying those higher-end processors will not ship until November.

All new iMac models feature an SD card slot and ship standard with a wireless keyboard and the new Multi-Touch Magic Mouse also unveiled today.

a new multi-touch mouse today called ”Magic Mouse”. The mouse uses the same multi-touch technology found in the iPhone, iPod Touch, and Mac notebook trackpads. The entire surface of the mouse is a seamless multi-touch surface.

The new mouse comes standard with the new iMacs introduced today and is also available separately for $69.

Apple also updated its Mac mini, offering spec bumps to its existing $599 and $799 models and adding a new $999 server model. The server model runs Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server and replaces the Mac mini’s usual optical drive with a second 2.5-inch hard drive, allowing for the 1 TB total hard drive capacity.

Apple updated the MacBook line with a new durable polycarbonate unibody design with LED-backlit display, glass multi-touch trackpad and a 7 hour battery life. The new design includes a non-skid bottom surface, and weighs 4.7 pounds. It contains a 2.26 GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 2 GB of RAM, 250GB HD and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics card. The new built-in battery can be replaced by Apple for $129.

The new MacBook is available immediately for the price of $999.

According to the Tech Trader Daily reports on a note to clients from research firm Wedge Partners predicting the release of updated iMac and MacBook models within the next several weeks. The refresh is expected to bring a significant redesign to the iMac, while the MacBook is likely to see only limited enhancements on the design front.

Wedge sees a redesigned iMac witjh a “thinner, organic design, likely with smoothed or rounded edges. The MacBook redesign “is likely to be limited,” Wedge asserts.

The note also suggests that the updates will bring lower price tags in order to aggressively compete against Windows 7-based PCs and the low-cost netbook segment.

Wedge Partners’ report echoes previous claims suggesting that Apple is working on refreshed iMac and MacBook designs to be accompanied by lower price points later this year, but is the first to point to a release window for the new models in the very near future.

Engadget reports that Apple has quietly updated the entry-level white MacBook, adopting several of the components used in the base aluminum unibody MacBook model.Engadget speculates that the upgrade serves to prepare the last member of Apple’s notebook line for the addition of OpenCL in their upcoming OS X Snow Leopard. Updated specs include:

- Processor moved to 2.0 GHz Core 2 Duo with 1066 MHz frontside bus from 2.1 GHz Core 2 Duo with 866 MHz bus
- Standard RAM increased to 2 GB (two 1 GB sticks) from 1 GB (two 512 MB sticks)
- Graphics switched to NVIDIA 9400M with 256 MB of shared memory from Intel GMA X3100 with 144 MB of shared memory
- Bluetooth version updated to 2.1 from 2.0.
- 320 GB, 5400-rpm hard drive option added

These changes bring the white MacBook much closer in specs to the low-end aluminum MacBook. With the processor and graphics now matching, the $300 premium for the aluminum model primarily offers the new look, faster RAM, a slightly larger standard hard drive, Mini DisplayPort, and no FireWire port.

Apple, through an email invitation, announced that they will be holding a special media event on October 14th to introduce new products. The invitation had a picture of a Laptop Mac meaning this event we will most likely see new models of Macbooks and Macbook Pros.

There is an Apple media event for September 9th as rumored. 

Apple is expected to release new iPod nanos and a new iPod Touch. While Macbook and MacBook Pro updates are also in the pipeline, we have heard suggestions that those will not see updates until at least October.

Design
Overall, the design is beautiful, functional and simple. It is slim and light with all the features you would want in a laptop to carry around with you and do your work and browsing. This is not, however, a laptop that is meant to go solo. Your work and files probably have to be somewhere external or on another desktop Mac. This is, what I would consider, an on the road computer that does and carries what you really need and not everything you have. Very much like your iPod touch when it comes to storage.

Who is it for?
Well, its perfect if you have another Mac at home. It is not for people who need a main computer as this would not be able to hold everything you want and won’t play all your CDs and DVDs unless connected to and External Optical Drive or Remote Disc. If you are on the Go, then this laptop is for you. My Fellow Kuwaitis, this laptop is for you.
