Amazon to accept “Snow Leopard” Pre-Orders

Amazon has begun taking pre-orders for Apple’s forthcoming Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Amazon is currently offering Snow Leopard at Apple’s announced price of $29 for OS X Leopard users, and the listing notes that while Snow Leopard is slated for a September release, no official release date has been announced.

Amazon has also prominently featured an “Upgrade Path Alert” notifying customers that the upgrade is available only for Intel computers currently running OS X Leopard.

Please note, that only Apple OS X Leopard users are eligible for the Snow Leopard upgrade. Tiger & earlier OS users will need to purchase either versions of the upgraded Mac Box Set. Also, Snow Leopard will only run on intel-based Mac computers.

Amazon has also begun offering pre-orders of OS X Snow Leopard family packs, Mac Box Sets bundling Snow Leopard with iLife ’09 and iWork ’09, and Snow Leopard Server.

Apple posted a new Java update through software update.

Java for Mac OS X 10.5 Update 4 delivers improved reliability, security, and compatibility for Java SE 6, J2SE 5.0 and J2SE 1.4.2 on Mac OS X 10.5.7 and later. This release updates Java SE 6 to version 1.6.0_13, J2SE 5.0 to version 1.5.0_19, and J2SE 1.4.2 to 1.4.2_21.

Apple Releases Mac OS X 10.5.7 and Safari Updates

Apple has launched the long-awaited 10.5.7 Mac OS X update to customers today through Mac OS X’s Software Update utility. The new update is said to provide general fixes to the operating system:
The 10.5.7 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac.

Mac OS X 10.5.7 Update (442 MB) – Requires OS X 10.5.6

Mac OS X Server Combo 10.5.7 (951 MB)

Some highlights include:

- Improves performance of video playback and cursor movements for recent Macs with NVIDIA graphics.
- Improves Finder search results for network volumes that may not support Spotlight searching
- Addresses a situation that may cause issues when logging into Gmail
- Improves consistency with Parental Controls and application restrictions

Apple also released security updates for OS X 10.4 Tiger users:

Safari 3.2.3 for Windows (19.69 MB) – Requires Windows XP or Vista

Finally, Apple released an update for Safari 4 Beta, bringing security changes outlined in this support document. The Safari 4 Beta update is currently available via Software Update for those users who have upgraded to OS X 10.5.7.

Apple released several security-related updates through Software Update and Apple’s Support Downloads site.

Security Update 2009-001 addresses a number of vulnerabilities detailed in the update’s support document, notably including the Safari RSS vulnerability disclosed in mid-January.

Multiple input validation issues exist in Safari’s handling of feed: URLs. The issues allow execution of arbitrary JavaScript in the local security zone. This update addresses the issues through improved handling of embedded JavaScript within feed: URLs. Credit to Clint Ruoho of Laconic Security, Billy Rios of Microsoft, and Brian Mastenbrook for reporting these issues.

Macs hit with BitTorrent-embedded malware attack

Now we’re seeing one of the first moderately-sized exploits to take advantage of Mac users. The iServices.A Trojan horse is an attack being distributed via BitTorrent, where it’s disguised as a bootleg copy of the new iWork 09. Once installed, the malware takes administrator access and connects to remote servers over the Internet, where it can be given additional instructions as the author commands, from installing additional malware to stealing information off the Mac in question. The malware creator can also take complete remote control of any compromised machine.

Security firm Intego said that just 20,000 machines had been infected as of January 21 but that the risk of ongoing infection was “serious, and users may face extremely serious consequences” if they are stricken with the malware.

Mac users are suggested to use common sense — that is, don’t try to download and installed pirated software — and to update any antivirus definitions immediately.

Apple has released Mac OS X 10.5.6 to customers this afternoon.

The 10.5.6 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac.

Apple details the changes in this support document. Some highlights include:

- Improves reliability of Address Book syncing with iPhone and other devices and applications.
- Improves the reliability of AirPort connections, including improvements when roaming in large wireless networks with an Intel-based Mac.
- Resolves an issue in which pasting text from a Microsoft Office document could insert an image rather than text.
- Includes general improvements to gaming performance.
- Includes graphics improvements for iChat, Cover Flow, Aperture, and iTunes.
- Includes fixes for possible graphics distortion issues with certain ATI graphics cards.
- Mail: Includes overall performance and reliability fixes.
- MobileMe: Contacts, calendars, and bookmarks on a Mac automatically sync within a minute of the change being made on the computer, another device, or the web at me.com.
- Improves reliability and performance for AT&T 3G cards.
- Fixes issues that could cause Time Machine to state the backup volume could not be found.
- Improves Time Machine reliability with Time Capsule.
- Safari: Improves compatibility with web proxy servers.

The 10.5.6 update is available as a free download through Mac OS X 10.5′s Software Update.

WARNING : A warning for all you iPhone jailbreak enthusiasts: Apple’s newest OS software update contains quite a stink bomb—10.5.6 disables the Pwnage tool, making you unable to jailbreak or unlock your iPhone or iPod Touch, the simplest way to work around the update for now is to copy some of the 10.5.5 framework files over the newer ones… or not update.

New Apple Ads Respond to Microsoft Ad Campaign

Apple Just released a new Security Update “Security Update 2008-07″ that can be downloaded from software update under the apple logo pull down menu from your mac : 

Security Update 2008-007 is recommended for all users and improves the security of Mac OS X. Previous security updates have been incorporated into this security update.

EFi-X is the latest commercial product to allow PCs to boot Mac OS X. A company called Psystar made headlines in April when it introduced its “Open Computer” which was built from generic PC parts and also allowed users to boot Mac OS X Leopard. Psystar advertised the computer as an affordable alternative to an official Apple Mac. Psystar would install a modified version of Mac OS X on their computers to allow them to boot into Apple’s operating system. Apple has since sued the company citing copyright infringement.

EFi-X takes a different approach by offering a hardware add-on that allows you to install an unmodified Mac OS X onto certain PC configurations. EFi-X is offering it as afor enthusiasts tool , and not necessarily for those looking to save money.

Only specific hardware configurations are supported, but if your PC fits those specifications, the EFi-X add-on promises headache free installation and upgrades.
