With all the hype of news from last night’s keynote, we kind of missed out noting the release of “FaceTime” for the Mac, Apple released a Beta version of the software which enables Mac users to engage FaceTime calls with iPhones, iPod Touches & macs alike over WiFi Only.

Apple has issued invitations for a special media event to be held next Wednesday, October 20th at 10:00 AM Pacific Time (8PM Local Kuwait Time). The invitation for the event, which is to be held at the company’s campus in Cupertino, California, carries the tagline “Back to the Mac“.

The invitation also contains an image of what appears to be a lion peeking out from behind the Apple logo (shown above), hinting at discussion of Mac OS X 10.7. “Lion” has been one of the most commonly-suggested “big cat” names for the next-generation operating system.

Apple released Mac OS X 10.6.3 update for Snow Leopard via Software Update and the company’s software downloads page.

The update offers several hundred fixes implemented since the release of Mac OS X 10.6.2 last November and an interim security update issued in January.

The 10.6.3 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac, including fixes that:

- improve the reliability and compatibility of QuickTime X
- address compatibility issues with OpenGL-based applications
- address an issue that causes background message colors to display incorrectly in Mail
- resolve an issue that prevented files with the # or & characters in their names from opening in Rosetta applications
- resolve an issue that prevented files from copying to Windows file servers
- improve performance of Logic Pro 9 and Main Stage 2 when running in 64-bit mode
- improve sleep and wake reliability when using Bonjour wake on demand
- address a color issue in iMovie with HD content
- improve printing reliability
- resolve issues with recurring events in iCal when connected to an Exchange server
- improve the reliability of 3rd party USB input devices
- fix glowing, stuck, or dark pixels when viewing video from the iMac (Late 2009) built-in iSight camera

Apple has also released Security Update 2010-002 for users on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

This update improves compatibility with a number of devices and fixes other minor issues, including:

- Improved compatibility with camcorders using the iFrame video format
- Improved compatibility with importing video captured on the iPod nano
- Fixed problems with resizing the iMovie window during playback

Apple today announced that Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard will go on sale Friday, August 28 at Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers, and that Apple’s online store is now accepting pre-orders.

Snow Leopard is available as an upgrade for users of Mac OS 10.5 Leopard for $29 as a single user license and $49 as a family pack. For users of Mac OS 10.4 Tiger and earlier, the Mac Box Set includes Mac OS X Snow Leopard, iLife ’09 and iWork ’09 for $169 as a single user license and a family pack for $229. (prices in USD)

“Outlook for Mac will deliver the functionality that businesses have come to expect from Outlook on Windows,” said Eric Wilfred, the general manager of Microsoft’s Mac Business Unit in a conference call this morning.

“Outlook for Mac and Outlook for Windows will be different, for sure, and they will also be compatible, for sure,” Wilfred added when asked what kind of parity users should expect between the two applications.

Microsoft will ship the next version of Office for Mac — which doesn’t yet have an official title — in “time for the holiday season in 2010,” Wilfred said.
