Apple to Stream Video As Well as Music and TV from ‘the Cloud’

Posted on 03 March 2010 by G-Funk

CNet reports that Apple’s plans for cloud computing could go well beyond music. Apple is said to have been in negotiations with some of the major film studios to offer streaming video service to users.

Apple has told the studios that under the plan, iTunes users will access video from various Internet-connected devices. Apple would, of course, prefer that users access video from the iPad, the company’s upcoming tablet computer, the sources said.

Apple has been making apparent moves into streaming content with the acquisition of LaLa media and their North Carolina data center, but previous rumors had focused primarily on music streaming.

Apple to Overhaul iTunes Service?

Posted on 10 December 2009 by G-Funk

The Wall Street Journal claims that Apple is looking at an “overhaul of the way it sells and stores music” and how to extend that service into the web. According to “people familiar with the matter”, Apple is considering using Lala’s recently acquired engineers and technologies to accomplish that.

Lala currently allows users to buy and listen to music through their web browser. An Apple version of the service would operate the same way, with music being streamed to users from a central server. This is in stark contrast to Apple’s current iTunes model, where songs are purchased and downloaded locally. Record company executives are said to be optimistic about the prospect, but wary at giving Apple more power.

Such a move, however, would be a big departure for Apple, who has previously insisted that customers wish to own their music. This on-demand streaming raises issues of long-term ownership as well as technical issues if rights holders or providers go out of business in the future.

Overall, the article adds little new information but does seem to confirm much of the speculation that Apple might translate Lala’s exact business model over to iTunes.

Apple Special Event Scheduled for Sep 9th

Posted on 18 August 2009 by G-Funk

All Things Digital reports that Apple has scheduled a media event for Wednesday, September 9th in San Francisco. The event will presumably take place at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts where similar Apple events have been held in the past, and will be focused on iPod and iTunes updates. The sources claim that no mention will be made of Apple’s much-anticipated tablet computer.

The event will be held in San Francisco — most likely at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, where it has occurred in years past — and is expected to showcase upgrades to the iPod line and an update to iTunes that may involve some sort of social element. Our sources insist it will not involve any discussion whatsoever of the tablet that Apple is reportedly developing.

There is no word yet on whether Apple CEO Steve Jobs will be presenting for the first time since his return from a medical leave of absence for a liver transplant.
