New Mac Pros Soon?

AppleInsider reports that Apple is ready to unleash Penryn-based Mac Pros as soon as Intel can provide the new chips to Apple.

Quote :

They’ll also be amongst the first machines from any PC manufacturer to employ chips from Intel’s upcoming Penryn family of 45-nanometer (nm) microprocessors — specifically the upcoming Hi-k Xeons, which will be available in dual- and quad-core variants for workstations with front-side bus speeds of either 1333MHz or 1600MHz.

Confirming reports filed by the Inquirer earlier this month, people familiar with the matter say the new Mac Pro line lineup will top out with an 8-core configuration that employs two top-of-the-line quad-core “Harpertown” chips. The top-bin Xeons, which offer the faster 1600MHz bus and 12MB of L2 cache, will start trickling in around mid-November at speeds of up to 3.2GHz.

Third Party Applications on the iPhone

Apple CEO “Steve Jobs” has posted an open letter revealing that Apple will be releasing a 3rd party Software Development Kit (SDK) for iPhone and iPod Touch applications. The SDK will be released in February 2008.

Here’s What Steve has to say :

Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February. We are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users. With our revolutionary multi-touch interface, powerful hardware and advanced software architecture, we believe we have created the best mobile platform ever for developers.

It will take until February to release an SDK because we’re trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once—provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc. This is no easy task. Some claim that viruses and malware are not a problem on mobile phones—this is simply not true. There have been serious viruses on other mobile phones already, including some that silently spread from phone to phone over the cell network. As our phones become more powerful, these malicious programs will become more dangerous. And since the iPhone is the most advanced phone ever, it will be a highly visible target.

Some companies are already taking action. Nokia, for example, is not allowing any applications to be loaded onto some of their newest phones unless they have a digital signature that can be traced back to a known developer. While this makes such a phone less than “totally open,” we believe it is a step in the right direction. We are working on an advanced system which will offer developers broad access to natively program the iPhone’s amazing software platform while at the same time protecting users from malicious programs.

We think a few months of patience now will be rewarded by many years of great third party applications running on safe and reliable iPhones.

Steve

P.S.: The SDK will also allow developers to create applications for iPod touch. [Oct 17, 2007]

iPod Touch Status: Hacked, Liberated, Free!!!

Finally my iPod touch is free! Yes, I hacked it, and I made do many things. A while back I reviewed the iPod touch and I said that it is an excellent device but is way too limited and needs to be hack in order for people to use it effectively. About a month later, hackers realized and utilized a flaw in Safari, the TIFF exploit, which allows a person to insert code in from the buffer. A couple of days after that hackers where all up inside the iPod touch and soon after, yesterday, we got a hack guide. I used the guide to hack my iPod touch and what can I say, it works!!! I can go on and on but I’ll let the images do the talking. I will also give it a week and see what happens with it and report back.

New MacBooks due November ?

Think Secret believes Apple is set to introduce updated MacBook laptops following the release of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard later this month, sources report. With Leopard on track to hit stores October 26, the updated MacBooks could be consumer hands by the first half of November, if not sooner.

Sources believe the MacBook update will not be too substantial, instead mirroring a similar speed bump the systems received last November ahead of the holiday buying season. It is unclear at this time whether this means the MacBook will maintain its current architecture and receive faster processors, from the current 2.0/2.16GHz configurations to 2.16/2.33GHz, or whether it will adopt the newer Santa Rosa architecture that the MacBook Pro gained earlier this year.

They also believe that Apple is not expected to update the MacBook Pro before the end of the year, and sources at this time don’t expect any other Mac hardware to see a revision before the holidays.
