The Wait is Almost Over . iPhone goes on sale TODAY!

Finally . The day we all been waiting for has come upon us, The Gadget we all dreamt of owning is coming on sale today. Apple and AT&T have been stocking it’s stores with iPhones since yesterday to cope with the demand of the first day of sale . People have been camping in-front of Apple stores to be among the first to get one .

Apple’s not being stingy like AT&T… okay, maybe not as stingy. But according to a new announcement this morning, the company said that it will limit people’s purchases of the iPhone to two per person on launch day, not just one. As expected, they are first come, first served.

All 164 of Apple’s retail stores will be open on Friday to sell the iPhone from 6 PM (launch time) all the way until midnight. The fact that they plan to stay open that long gives some people a glimmer of hope that maybe stock numbers won’t be as sparse as everyone fears. Of course, that could be a totally misleading, optimistic hope, but hope nonetheless.

And as usual, beginning Saturday, Apple will be offering all-day (free) workshops to learn about the iPhone. Customers will also be able to sign up for One on One personal training for the iPhone.

iTunes 7.3 to support iPhone ring tones .

iTunes 7.3 is listed as a requirement for the iPhone but has not yet been released by Apple. Reportedly, the new version of iTunes will allow you to convert any song that is available on iTunes into a ringtone with the “Make into Ringtone” feature. The cost for this service is $.99. It’s not clear, based on information available, whether or not CD-ripped songs can also be easily converted or this is specifically an iTunes Store feature.

When a song is selected for conversion, a “garageband like” interface comes up to allow you to pic the 30 second clip you want.

OpenOffice.org, Ported to Aqua!

I Have always been a supporter of Open source software and as usual this is another open source software review. I know most of our readers have shed the Microsoft curse and are using products like NeoOffice and AbiWord. OpenOffice.org have just released an Alpha edition of their OpenOffice which is ported to Aqua. This edition is not meant for full time deployment, rather, it is a test release to iron out kinks and performances issues. After using this product for several hours I have found it to be quite unstable and at times temperamental. It does, however, looks good and is faster then NeoOffice when it comes to load times. What was very weird is that the cursor is far away from the last letter typed and it is very hard to know if it is a space or just the letter between the cursor and the letter. When I quit the program it crashed but that is noted on the release notes. Over all, the OpenOffice suite looks great but needs some time to come a long and iron out all the kinks and quirks in it. If you are the adventures type I suggest you give it a test drive and see how it fairs on your Mac. A word to the wise though, don’t use it for critical documents because it is not yet mature enough.

Some Known Issues:
* You cannot print
* PDF export does not properly work as thetext won’t show on the page right
* Starting OpenOffice.org from a shared folder does not work
* Copy and paste does not fully work
* OpenOffice.org will crash after quitting
* Some text is not drawn in places like Impress
* Impress will not recognize multiple monitors
